Practicing Good Relationship Hygiene—Even in Politics

Oh no… a post about politics? Oh yes—because it’s affecting all of us right now.

Emotions are running high—some folks are elated, others deeply frustrated, and many are just trying to stay out of it altogether. But no matter where you land, there’s one thing we’re all seeing: the rise of harsh, dehumanizing language when talking about the “other side.”

In therapy, we often talk about relationship hygiene—the everyday habits that keep our connections healthy and respectful. Things like:

- Honest communication

- Respecting boundaries

-Calm conflict resolution

- Expressing gratitude

These aren’t just for romantic or family relationships. They matter in all human interactions—even political ones.

When we speak with cruelty or mock people we disagree with (even when they’re not in the room), it reinforces habits of disconnection. And that’s not just bad for democracy—it’s hard on us too.

Let’s name a few common phrases floating around online:

"MAGAt" (meant to sound like “maggot”)—used to dehumanize Trump supporters.

"Libtard" (a mix of “liberal” and an ableist slur)—used to insult intelligence and dignity.

"tRump"—emphasizes “rump” to mock, not engage.

"Dumbocrat"—another way to shut down dialogue by attacking intelligence.

We live in a democracy. Disagreement is necessary. So is passionate debate. But the way we talk to—and about—each other matters.

Writer Mónica Guzmán encourages us to approach disagreement with curiosity instead of contempt. This doesn’t mean softening our views—it means holding onto our humanity and our convictions. If we can approach others with curiosity, we are sure to discover that there is far more that unites us than separates us.

So yes—debate. Disagree. But do it with integrity.

Practice good relationship hygiene, even in politics. Because it’s not just about them. It’s about who you are becoming in the process.
